Alê Gomes: Brief Therapy with IRT

For those who've tried everything, but the change never came.

What is IRT

Brief and focused therapy. Unlike long-term therapies, IRT works in a few sessions to get straight to what’s keeping you stuck. Those who suffer don’t have time to waste, and the treatment respects that.

It works with what’s underneath. Understanding the problem in your head isn’t enough. IRT accesses the implicit patterns — the ones that repeat without you noticing — and helps break them from the inside out.

Your body is part of it. Your emotions don’t live only in your mind. They show up in your body — in tension, in posture, in the way you react. IRT takes that into account so the change is complete, not just intellectual.

About Me

About Me

I’m a computer engineer that uses technology to connect people. Although I have a passion for systems my true love is people and seeing them progress. There’s no thing in the world that brings me more joy than seeing how positively I can affect people, either through dance, through a conversation, or therapy session. Witnessing someone find better ways to live fills my heart and is what really fuels my life.

For many years (15 years) I gave space mostly to my precise and logical side, thinking that those were my biggest strengths, not realizing that I’ve always been guiding people wherever I was: school, university, office. Always using empathy and compassion as the main drivers.

However, that only became clear to me when I joined the world of partner dancing. When I started seeing that even with only a few steps I was able to listen, to give and to receive so much, was when I started seeing that there was so much more about me, that my brains and systems are all one with my body. I started seeing that I was deeply empathetic, and understanding, that I could hold space for emotions that people didn’t even know they had, and with that transformation would follow.

And the transformation did not happen only for others, it happened to me. Through my own therapeutic process in psychotherapy I shed old people-pleasing habits, started living fully in many different ways that I never thought possible before until I chose a type of life that deeply aligned with me. That life allowed me to discover myself, to get married to the most amazing woman in the world and to work daily to build the type of world I want to live in. One where people are free to choose and not be forced by necessity, where women are as powerful and heard as men, where men are more than strong and providing.

In my process of living and building this new world for myself, I’ve been an advocate for psychotherapy of all kinds and I believe everyone should seek external help for their mental health, just like we do with our physical one. While on my unofficial activism, I was still trying to find something that would allow people to realize their potential and live fully faster. That’s when, led by hypnosis which I started studying in 2018, I found IRT. I’ve researched multiple practices through the years but none has aligned so much with how I see overall health as Implicit Reintegration Therapy does. Everything is connected and the problem is never the problem.

IRT also allows me to bring in all my experience as a reliability engineer to my practice. When dealing with delicate situations I am able to keep myself calm and systematically, little by little, assess it and what’s underneath it, guiding my clients to the root, the hidden pattern and break it, then using observability in the follow-up sessions to monitor and confirm the change is taking effect.

So if you would like to understand these sensations you feel but cannot name and allow yourself to make different choices, I’m here for you. Welcome.

Who is IRT for

You’ve tried. You’ve read books, taken courses, talked it through, reflected. Maybe you’ve been through other therapies. And still, something hasn’t changed.

It’s not a lack of knowledge or will. It’s something beyond that — something the body knows, but the mind hasn’t been able to name yet.

You might benefit from IRT if:

That pressure in your chest appears without warning.
Like something heavy has settled there. You take a deep breath. Try to ignore it. Try to understand where it comes from. But it comes back.
That knot in your throat tightens at the worst moments.
You need to speak, but your voice won’t come out. Need to defend yourself, but your body freezes.
That empty feeling in your stomach isn't hunger.
A hole that nothing fills. You wake up and it’s already there.
That tiredness doesn't go away with rest.
It’s not a lack of sleep. It’s a weight in your bones, an exhaustion that comes from inside. Carrying your own life is heavy. And sometimes it’s too heavy.
That tightness in your shoulders and neck has become part of you.
You don’t even notice anymore. You only feel it when someone touches you and says “relax”. But you don’t know how.
Your heart is racing for no clear reason.
You’re at home. Safe. But your body acts as if there’s danger. And you become afraid of your own fear.
The repetition continues.
The same fight, the same type of person, the same pattern you swore you’d broken. And maybe you did break it. But it came back. Because it wasn’t just in your head. It was etched somewhere deeper.
That discomfort you feel your doctor has investigated and found no cause for.
Your body is speaking. Just not in the language you expected.

If something here resonated with you, maybe IRT can help. Not with ready-made answers, but by creating a space where what your body carries can finally be heard.

What IRT works with:

ConditionHow IRT approaches it
Anxiety disorderHelps recognize the triggers that lead to anxiety and develop more effective coping strategies, working with the discomfort before it turns into fear.
DepressionSeen as a state of disconnection from one’s own emotions and motivations. IRT seeks to reintegrate those emotions to restore balance.
OCDWorks with the emotions underlying obsessive thoughts, helping the client find new strategies to deal with discomfort without resorting to compulsive behaviors.
Panic syndromeFocuses on the discomfort that precedes the crisis, interrupting the fear-of-fear cycle.
Repetitive relational patternsIdentifies and deactivates the emotional schemas that make you repeat choices or dynamics that hurt you.
Avoidance behaviorsSafe, mediated exposure to the discomfort you avoid, reducing the need for immediate gratifications (food, shopping, entertainment, isolation).

IRT is not for you if:

  • You’re looking for a clinical diagnosis or psychiatric treatment. IRT is a brief psychotherapy, not a substitute for doctors or psychiatrists.
  • You expect a solution in a single session with no engagement on your part. Change requires presence and a willingness to sit with discomfort.
  • You need medication intervention. IRT is a non-pharmacological practice and does not prescribe or suspend medication.

How it works

IRT is a brief psychotherapy focused on specific issues with well-defined goals. Unlike long-term, open-ended therapies, it requires direct focus on the conflicts or symptoms that bring you here, working in a few sessions to access what’s keeping you stuck. Those who suffer don’t have time to waste, and the treatment respects that.

1. First session (assessment) — 45 min

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. I want to hear what’s bothering you, understand your story, and from there, explain how the therapy works for you. There’s no deep intervention in this session — the focus is on building a safe connection and understanding where you are.

Available online or in person.

2. Main session — 2h

This is the core session of IRT. You’re invited to focus on the sensations in your body. Not to relive the past, but to access the emotional pattern that keeps your suffering alive in the present. The process is guided and safe, carried out in three stages:

  • Stabilization: we establish a safe space so you can connect with your emotions without being overwhelmed.
  • Reintegration: with your consent and presence, we access the discomfort you unconsciously avoid. Not to relive the past, but to break the pattern that repeats in the present.
  • Emersion and re-education: we review what happened and align how adaptation will unfold from here.
Over 70% of cases show significant improvement with a single session, when applied correctly.

3. Follow-up (1 to 3 months later) — included

A follow-up session to check how you’re doing and reinforce the changes.

4. Reinforcement session (6 months) — free

An additional session to consolidate the process and ensure the transformation holds.

Frequently Asked Questions

About IRT

IRT stands for Implicit Reintegration Therapy. It’s a brief, focused psychotherapy based on neuroscience that works with automatic emotional patterns — the ones that repeat without you noticing — to break them from the inside out.

Over 70% of cases show significant improvement with a single main session, when applied correctly. The full process includes an assessment session, the main session, a follow-up after 1 month, and a reinforcement session after 6 months (free).

IRT doesn’t replace other approaches — it complements them. It’s especially indicated for cases where cognitive or behavioral interventions haven’t produced the expected result, or when there’s no apparent cause for the suffering.

It’s psychotherapy. IRT is a structured therapeutic approach, grounded in neuroscience, with its own code of ethics and specific training. It is not coaching or motivational speaking.

About the sessions

The session is a guided, safe process. With your consent, you’re invited to focus on the sensations in your body — not to relive the past, but to access the emotional pattern that maintains your suffering in the present. The therapist acts as a mediator, creating a space where you can feel what was previously avoided, without judgment.

It’s not physically painful, but it can be emotionally intense. You may feel discomfort when contacting emotions that were “dormant.” That’s expected and part of the process. You’re never taken beyond what you can handle.

You’re in control at all times. IRT respects your pace. If something feels too intense, the therapist adjusts the process. Trust and safety are the priority.

We can talk about the past, yes, but always with a purpose: understanding how past experiences connect to the patterns repeating in the present. The focus is not on reliving, but on bringing clarity to what still echoes today. What happened matters less than how it still lives in you.
